Eligible mattersLocal personal injury lawyers serving Parramatta and Western Sydney
Stephen Young Lawyers is a specialist personal injury and compensation firm that regularly acts for people who live and work throughout Parramatta, Westmead, Harris Park, Granville, Merrylands, Rydalmere and the wider Cumberland region.
We understand this part of Sydney. Greater Parramatta is now the second largest economy in New South Wales and one of the fastest growing places in the country. It is home to major public hospitals, a large construction and health workforce, thousands of warehouse and factory workers, and some of the heaviest traffic corridors in the state. When something goes wrong here, the consequences can be serious and the claims process can feel overwhelming.
That is where we come in. Our principal is an Accredited Specialist in Personal Injury Law with more than 20 years of experience, and every matter receives direct principal involvement. We take the time to understand what has happened to you, we explain your options in plain language, and we handle the paperwork, the insurer and the deadlines so you can focus on your recovery.
We act for Parramatta clients on a No Win No Fee basis, and we are a multilingual team. Many of our clients feel more comfortable receiving advice in Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean or Malay, which matters in a community as diverse as Western Sydney.
Local knowledge
Where injuries happen in Parramatta
Knowing the area helps us understand your claim. These are the situations we see most often across Western Sydney.
On the roads
The M4 Motorway, the Church Street off ramp, James Ruse Drive, Woodville Road, Parramatta Road and the Great Western Highway carry enormous volumes of traffic, including thousands of heavy vehicle movements every day. Church Street and the Parramatta CBD are also busy pedestrian areas now shared with the new light rail. We act in car, motorbike, bicycle, pedestrian, CTP and hit and run matters.
At work
The Westmead Health and Innovation Precinct supports around 30,000 jobs, and the industrial precincts of Camellia, Rydalmere and Silverwater are full of warehousing, manufacturing and logistics work. We regularly act for injured hospital staff, construction workers on the light rail and metro projects, and warehouse workers with lifting, back, crush and machinery injuries.
In public places
Slips, trips and falls happen at shopping centres such as Westfield Parramatta, at Parramatta Square, on footpaths, at stations and on council land. Where an occupier or authority has failed to keep you safe, you may have a public liability claim.
In hospital and care
Westmead is the Major Trauma Centre for Western Sydney and Western New South Wales, and the area is served by several large public and private hospitals and clinics. Where avoidable harm is caused by substandard treatment, we can advise on a medical negligence claim supported by independent expert evidence.
Serious and life changing injury
Road incidents account for close to a quarter of all major trauma admissions at Westmead. For clients facing spinal, brain, amputation or other catastrophic injuries, we pursue the full range of statutory benefits and common law damages available.
Illness and disability claims
An injury or illness that stops you working may entitle you to Total and Permanent Disability benefits and income protection through your superannuation. Many people do not realise they hold this cover. We can check your policies and make the claim for you.
What we do
Compensation claims we handle for Parramatta clients
Every matter is different, and the right pathway depends on how and where you were injured. The table below is a general guide to the main claim types and their time limits. It is illustrative only and is not a substitute for advice about your own situation.
| Claim type | A common Parramatta example | How it is usually resolved | General time limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workers compensation | A warehouse worker in Silverwater hurts their back lifting stock | Statutory scheme through your employer's insurer, with disputes decided by the Personal Injury Commission | Report to your employer straight away and claim generally within six months |
| Work injury damages | A construction worker on a Westmead site is seriously injured through employer negligence | A common law claim that can proceed to the District Court at the Parramatta Justice Precinct | Strict thresholds apply, so seek advice early |
| Motor accident (CTP) | A driver, rider or pedestrian is hit on the M4 or at the Church Street off ramp | Statutory benefits regardless of fault and, for serious injury, a common law claim under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017 | Lodge within 28 days to backdate weekly benefits, and within three months to claim them |
| Public liability | A shopper slips at a Parramatta centre or trips on a broken footpath | A negligence claim against the occupier or council and their insurer | Generally within three years of the injury |
| Medical negligence | A patient suffers avoidable harm at a Western Sydney hospital or clinic | A negligence claim supported by independent medical evidence | Generally within three years, subject to exceptions |
| TPD and superannuation | An injury leaves a Parramatta worker permanently unable to return to their job | A claim through your superannuation fund and its insurer | Check your policy, as terms and limits vary between funds |
Time limits in New South Wales are strict and there are important exceptions. If any deadline may have passed, contact us anyway. In some cases an extension is available.
Where your claim is heard
Parramatta courts and the Personal Injury Commission
One advantage of dealing with a firm that knows Western Sydney is that we understand the local legal landscape. The Parramatta Justice Precinct on George Street is one of the largest court complexes in the southern hemisphere and houses the District Court and Supreme Court. Serious common law claims, including work injury damages and some negligence matters, can be heard there rather than in the city.
Most compensation disputes, however, are not resolved in a courtroom at all. Workers compensation and motor accident disputes are handled by the Personal Injury Commission, which conducts many of its conferences and hearings by telephone and video. That means Parramatta clients rarely need to travel far, and we appear on your behalf either way.
.
The main bodies you may deal with
✓State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) regulates the workers compensation and CTP schemes in New South Wales.
✓Personal Injury Commission is the independent tribunal that resolves workers compensation and motor accident disputes.
✓District Court at Parramatta can hear work injury damages and other common law claims for local clients.
✓SafeWork NSW is the regulator for workplace health and safety.
We deal with these bodies so you do not have to.

Questions we hear from Western Sydney clients
Parramatta personal injury FAQs
Do I have to travel into the city to see a lawyer?
No. We meet Parramatta clients by appointment locally, near the Justice Precinct or Westmead, and we offer phone and video consultations. If you cannot travel because of your injury, we can arrange a home or hospital visit. Our Sydney CBD office is also only a short train ride from Parramatta station if you would rather meet there.
I was injured while working at Westmead. Which claim applies?
Most work injuries are covered by the workers compensation scheme through your employer's insurer, which can provide weekly payments, medical expenses and lump sum compensation. If your employer was negligent and your injury is serious, you may also have a work injury damages claim at common law. If you were driving for work when the accident happened, a CTP claim may apply as well. We can identify every avenue open to you.
My accident happened on the M4 or James Ruse Drive. What should I do?
Report the accident to police if you have not already, seek medical attention and keep records. Under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017 most injured people can claim statutory benefits regardless of who was at fault. Lodging within 28 days means your weekly benefits can be backdated to the date of the accident, so it is important to act quickly. We can lodge the claim for you.
How much will it cost to use your firm?
Your first consultation is free, and we act on personal injury matters on a No Win No Fee basis. For eligible workers compensation matters, funding may also be available through the Independent Review Office. We explain all costs clearly before you commit to anything.
Can I still claim if the accident was partly my fault?
Often, yes. Many CTP statutory benefits are payable regardless of fault. In common law claims, being partly responsible may reduce your compensation through contributory negligence rather than defeat the claim entirely. It is always worth getting advice about your particular circumstances.
Do you speak my language?
Our team speaks English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean and Malay. Receiving clear legal advice in your preferred language can make a real difference, particularly at a stressful time, and we welcome clients from across Western Sydney's diverse communities.
